Yesterday was a slow day… and yet I accomplished something we’ve talked about doing for over a year.
It wasn’t too many years ago that I was walking 3 miles a day. These days my body is “rusty”. I feel like I’ve accomplished something when I can put in a good 1 mile! On the treadmill. Perhaps once the weather improves enough, and I feel more like walking outside, that mileage will start increasing. In the meantime I satisfy myself with the knowledge that 1 mile may not be much, but it’s a mile further than I was walking just a month ago! And I have this little routine when I walk… I have a small, light-weight set of dumbbells that I use to do curls and other upper arm routines as I walk. I’ve never had good upper arm strength, though I did use to have tremendous “explosive” upper arm ability. I could be called on to handle VERY heavy loads for a small burst of explosive strength.
After my “workout”, as usual, I took a brief nap, then loaded Gary up in the car for a drive down to the DHS. Gary’s not worked in 4 years, and his health is a primary cause of that. He’s a dwarf, or more appropriately, he’s a Little Person. He didn’t have a lot of encouragement growing up, and by the time he was 15, he was on drugs. He used for another 15 years, before kicking the habit. Unfortunately, those 15 years left him without teeth, and with a mental capacity of a 15 year old… on good days. So, he’s most suited to physical labor… something he loved doing. But now, he has trouble just walking from one room to another without falling… so labor jobs are out. I’ve provided a home for him for a decade, the last 5 of which he has been able to contribute nothing.
So, with me currently jobless, we needed to do something to help financially. Hence our trip to DHS to get Gary signed up for food stamps. I’ve put that off because so much other stuff needed to be done… and because I loathe working with government agencies. I was so SHOCKED to find it a painless experience! We were in, interviewed, and out in less than an hour! And he should be receiving his food stamps in the next couple of weeks.
The rest of the day was a bit listless… I basically sat around until it was time for CLM last night.
And that was my day.
